A Company That Trades Like a Coin

According to Bloomberg Markets, Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) has returned to profitability on the back of a $21 billion unrealized gain on its Bitcoin holdings. The company's results are no longer those of a software firm with a crypto hobby — they are, in effect, a leveraged Bitcoin derivative wrapped in a Nasdaq-listed equity wrapper, and its quarterly profit or loss now moves almost entirely with the coin's price rather than with any software business.

This matters beyond one company's balance sheet. Strategy has become one of the most widely held proxies for Bitcoin exposure among institutional investors who cannot or will not hold the asset directly, alongside spot Bitcoin ETFs that have accumulated substantial assets since their 2024 launch. When a firm's reported profitability swings by double-digit billions based on unrealized mark-to-market gains, the line between a corporate earnings report and a daily net asset value statement has effectively dissolved.
